The United States embassy in Tanzania has shut its doors temporarily due to persistent internet disruptions in the city. A series of internet blackouts have caused a significant setback to routine consular services, putting visa interviews on hold and disrupting the embassy’s administrative tasks.

Much of Tanzania has been grappling with internet disconnections over the past few weeks, largely due to rampant vandalism and theft of network cables. The extensive scale of this issue has been underlined by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), which cites these internet downtimes as a major hindrance to several cities. The most significant impact has been shouldered by Dar es Salaam, the commercial hub and most populous city of Tanzania.

The network infrastructure theft in the East African nation has been escalating in recent years, undercutting a nation otherwise enjoying a burgeoning digital economy and a steady growth in internet users.

In an effort to address these network disruptions, plans are being put into action to boost the resilience of the country’s internet infrastructure. While it remains unclear who is behind the theft and vandalism of network cables, these upgrades are aimed at reducing the susceptibility of network cables to theft, adding a layer of protection that ensures stable internet connectivity and minimizes future disruptions.

Responding to these measures, a TCRA spokesperson stated that “Improving the state of our network cables across Tanzania will significantly lessen the chances of internet downtimes. It’s an issue we are keen on resolving, and we hope our efforts will lead to less disruption in the services and experiences of businesses, government institutions, and our citizens.”

The suspension of operations at the US embassy in Tanzania underscores the crucial role internet stability plays in maintaining not only routine communication but also crucial international relations. The current trying situation poses a pressing need to resolve the issue of internet disruptions in the nation, underlining the significance of implementing robust infrastructure improvements urgently.

For now, the US Embassy has not released a timeline for resuming its operations but has stressed that all adjustments will be communicated promptly and appropriately to those affected by the recent disruptions.
