Hunger crisis threatens one in four in DR Congo

One in four people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo suffers from “crisis or worse” levels of hunger that affect a staggering 25,6 million people, reports UN agencies.

The conflict in eastern DRC has disrupted vital agriculture production and the growth of essential infrastructure. This is a crisis fueled by shifting armed group dynamics and resource struggles, and exacerbated by deep-rooted geopolitical tensions. As a result, more than 6.5 million people are now displaced in the three eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu.

The situation is particularly concerning after decades of fighting that includes around 100 armed groups – including the M23 militia – fighting for control of vast natural resources, posing a threat to regional stability.
