In a significant move that will invigorate tourism sector recovery in Africa, the United Kingdom has decided to lift the travel restrictions on the most frequented tourist destinations on the continent. Following an assessment of the COVID-19 situation and progress in vaccination rates, beginning 11 October, travelers from countries including South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Tanzania will no longer be required to undertake the ten-day hotel quarantine upon arrival in the UK.

The decision comes as a major relief to these countries, whose economies have been dented by the travel restrictions implemented due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  Notably, the tourism sectors in these African nations contribute significantly to their GDP and employment, making this announcement a cause for celebration for sectors hit hard by the pandemic.

The move underscores the revised assessment of the COVID-19 scenario in these countries and recognizes the progress in their vaccination drives. However, despite the favorable assessment and the decision, the global travel scenario remains fluid due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic.

The UK however has chosen to retain Zimbabwe and Angola on its red list, owing to the persisting high rates of Covid-19 in these countries. They didn’t share in the concession granted to their African counterparts. Travelers from both nations will be subject to the expensive ten-day hotel quarantine once they land in the UK.

Tanzania, which also marks its removal from the red list, remains under close watch following its controversial policies pertaining to COVID-19. The country recently faced criticism for its unconventional and controversial approaches to managing the pandemic.

This reevaluation by the UK of its red list is in line with its response strategy to the global health crisis. It signifies advancements in international cooperation to boost economies in tandem with stringent health measures. It will be an impetus not only for the African countries’ tourism sectors but also for travelers who have been yearning to explore these exotic locations post the ease in travel restrictions. However, the UK maintains its vigil against the pandemic, promptly adjusting its policies as the situation evolves.
