South African President Ramsophosa Expresses Solidarity with Palestinians Celebrating Ramadan Amidst Conflict

Priscilla Agyeman-DuahBy Priscilla Agyeman-DuahMarch 12, 2024No Comments2 Mins Read
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a firm stance of solidarity with Palestinians and other Muslims worldwide observing the holy month of Ramadan amidst the hardships of ongoing conflicts. The president made his sentiments known in his weekly newsletter, expressing unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.   President Ramaphosa stated openly South Africa's identification with the Palestinians' quest for freedom, peace, and security. Aligning with South Africa's long history of combating inequality and fighting for human rights, Ramaphosa acknowledged the Palestinians's daily struggle and pledged South Africa’s support for a peaceful resolution.   Ramaphosa affirmed, recounting the country's journey under apartheid: "South Africa can relate to the sufferings of our Palestinian brothers and sisters; their strife is not unfamiliar to us. We stand with them, encouraging direct negotiations between both sides to achieve a just settlement."   In his address, President Ramaphosa also touched on the significance of Ramadan, a month of fasting observed by Muslims worldwide. The values associated with the holy month, he noted, include empathy, kindness, tolerance, and charity, making it a time of great spiritual reflection and personal growth for participants.   It is against this backdrop that the President emphasised the importance of global unity at this time. He pressed the relevance of these values in the face of a deeply divided world, reminding everyone of the need for mutual respect, understanding, and peaceful coexistence, especially during these challenging times.   He concluded his message with a word to all Muslims observing Ramadan, calling for lasting peace and unity in the face of adversity.   In a time fraught with global tension and marked by divisions, Ramaphosa's sentiment has been seen as a powerful affirmation of South Africa’s commitment to stand with the Palestinians and all Muslims observing Ramadan amidst constant conflict, drawing upon the sacred values of the holy month to advocate for a more harmonious global society.
