Raila Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya and newly appointed African Union’s (AU) Special Envoy for Infrastructure Development, has confirmed that his recent AU role will not interfere with his ongoing political activities in Kenya.
Breaking his silence about the speculation surrounding his future in Kenyan politics, Odinga stressed that accepting the continental assignment does not signify a departure from the local political scene.
“I am not retiring from local politics,” the former Prime Minister said emphatically. He added, “This new posting is another avenue to serve my continent and country, but it won’t inhibit my local political roles.”
The AU position, which was publicized recently, entails facilitating and advocating for integration, economic growth, and sustainable development of infrastructure across Africa. Nevertheless, Odinga demonstrated his commitment to fulfilling local obligations by stressing that his AU tasks and home political activities would run concurrently.
Even though the seasoned politician confidently dismissed rumors of a political retirement, he remained elusive about his intention for the 2022 presidential elections in Kenya. His silence on the matter has only fuelled speculation about his potential candidacy.
Odinga’s clear affirmation of his continued engagement in Kenyan politics, along with the ambiguity concerning his presidential aspiration, adds a new dimension to the convoluted and unpredictable political landscape in Kenya. However, the breadth and depth of his influence continue to be a dominant factor in the country’s upcoming political discourse.
His steadfast dedication to national politics, coupled with his new continental role, strengthens his position as an influential player in the shaping of Kenya’s and Africa’s socioeconomic future. It remains to be seen how the journey unfolds, as both Kenyan and African politicoeconomic environments await the further development and evolution of Odinga’s multifaceted roles.
