Nepal will have its own pavilion at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Nepal just before the conference has highlighted the country’s climate issues on the global arena.

In a programme organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoFE) on 7 November 2023 to discuss about the Nepal’s strategic engagement and preparations for the COP-28, the ministry confirmed that Nepal will have its own pavilion and more than 30 fields and topics will be presented.

Speaking at the event, MoFE Minister Birendra Prasad Mahato highlighted on Nepal’s meaningful participation at the COP28 and asked the stakeholders to focus on working papers that Nepal will be preparing in the pavilion. “We all partners, stakeholders have same objective so going through one window and making our voice stronger on climate agenda will help to bring more resources for adaptation and mitigation” he added.

According to Dr. Buddhi Sagar Paudel, Chief of the Climate Change Management Division at the MoFE, preparations are underway for the conference to present six topics from Nepal. An expert group has been formed to collect suggestions for the topic to cover aspects such as climate finance, adaptation, mountain technology transfer and capacity development, loss and damage, gender, youth, children, climate empowerment, and minimizing the impacts of climate change. He also informed that the position paper has been prepared through different discussion with the experts and interactions in the province level.
