Ethiopia’s national election has been dominated by the ruling Prosperity Party via sweeping success, as confirmed by the country’s electoral body. The party, led by incumbent Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has secured 410 out of the available 547 seats in the parliamentary polls, attributing him another five-year tenure.

While the victory heralds emphatically for the Prosperity Party, the election procedure has been tainted with marks of violence, apprehensions of unfair practices, and allegations that include voter intimidation and ballot stuffing. Reports seem to suggest that the climate for free and fair elections was considerably compromised, casting doubt on the credibility of the outcomes.

Furthermore, some of the country’s major opposition parties chose to abstain from participating in the election. The ongoing conflict in the northern Tigray region also significantly impacted the electoral process by preventing polling booths from opening, effectively leaving a considerable part of the voting population unaccounted for in the election results.

The U.S. Department of State has voiced its concerns over the election, reflecting the international community’s worries about the democratic process in Ethiopia. However, despite the post-election disputes and the difficulties presented by the election procedure, the U.S. Department of State has urged all parties to commit to resolving conflicts peacefully and through dialogue.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who came to power in 2018, has been acclaimed for initiating significant political reforms and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019. However, his tenure has also seen the country plunge into conflict, and his government has been heavily criticised for its handling of the war in the northern Tigray region.

This recent election victory comes amidst a turbulent political landscape, with escalating ethnic violence and the ongoing northern conflict posing challenging governance tasks for the ruling party. As Ethiopia proceeds under the leadership of the Prosperity Party, the world watches attentively for the navigation of these intricate issues during the new tenure.
