This declining influence in Africa comes despite fluctuating aid commitments from Canada amounting to between $2.3 billion and $3.3 billion since the start of 2010.
Experts, in their analysis, have pointed towards Canada’s declining influence in Africa, suggesting that this is more of a policy issue than a mere reflection of commitment or contribution on the part of the nation. A common critique has been the overemphasis by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on feminism and gender equality in Africa, often overlooking the pressing local issues.
“Canada has been prioritizing a global outlook of championing feminism and gender equality in Africa that disregards the immediate needs and concerns within the continent,” said a geopolitical analyst. “This could be jeopardizing its position and influence within Africa.”
Throughout the 1990s, peacekeeping had been a cornerstone of Canada’s foreign policy within sub-Saharan Africa. However, it is argued that this has lost its momentum in recent years, leading to a steadily diminishing influence of the country within the region.
Analysts argue that instead of focusing primarily on initiatives around feminism and gender equality, Canada needs to realign its strategies to help address more pressing needs in Africa. These include economic issues such as the need for infrastructure, unemployment, and local conflict resolutions, among others.
“A way forward for Canada would be to consider a more nuanced approach. Varying its strategies to consider and address pressing needs could go a long way in re-establishing its relevance within the African continent,” the analyst added.
It is clear that, in view of the fluctuating financial commitments from the Canadian government, there needs to be a broad-based review to ensure these funds are deployed to maximise the benefits of the recipient countries and align them with their pressing needs.
Canada’s historical reputation as a significant player and peacekeeper within Africa may serve as a saving grace if it readjusts its strategies and focuses more on the immediate needs of the African continent, regional experts suggest. If not, it would continue to see the culmination of the weakening of its influence within Africa.
